Marianne Brandt: Metal Workshop Triumph

Marianne Brandt’s admission to the metal workshop came through her persistence, talent, and support from László Moholy-Nagy 💡

The metal workshop was not ideally a friendly space for a woman. Despite the Bauhaus being a progressive institute; it had the very practice of coaxing its women students to do weaving work. Above all else, Marianne Brandt would not be ignored. In other words, the designer’s persistence was matched by his artful competence and she had a remarkable vision of industrial design.

László Moholy-Nagy recognized her outstanding talent early and gave her the breakthrough she needed to make it in the metal shop as a woman. She became his assistant and later the deputy head of the metal shop. The confident gesture by Moholy-Nagy gave her the confidence to develop her signature style further, a geometric form and functionalism making her be the first designer of modern movement.
